What halal certification involves and what we deliver
Halal certification confirms that a product and the way it is made meet Islamic dietary requirements. It is required or expected by importers and consumers in many markets with Muslim populations, and increasingly by retailers and food service companies elsewhere.
Certification looks at the whole chain. Ingredients and additives must come from permitted sources, with particular attention to animal-derived materials, gelatine, enzymes, flavourings, emulsifiers and alcohol used as a solvent. Meat and poultry must come from animals slaughtered according to halal rules. Production must prevent contamination with non-halal materials, through segregation, cleaning and, where needed, dedicated lines. Storage, transport and labelling are included too.
Most halal schemes also expect a halal assurance system: a documented system with a responsible team, trained staff, ingredient approval, traceability and internal checks, similar in structure to a food safety system.
- Market review to identify which halal certificates your importers accept
- Ingredient review with supplier documents and halal status of each material
- Gap analysis of segregation, cleaning, storage and labelling
- Support building the halal assurance system and training staff
- Arrangement of the audit with an accepted halal certification body
Halal is about more than slaughter. Even a plant-based snack can fail certification because of a flavour carrier, an alcohol-based extract or a processing aid of animal origin, which is why the ingredient review is the core of preparation.
Choosing the right certificate for your markets
This is the most important decision in halal certification. Halal rules are interpreted by religious authorities, and many importing countries only accept certificates from halal bodies they recognise. Some countries run their own official recognition lists, and a certificate from an unrecognised body can be rejected at the border.
Standards differ as well. Some markets apply national halal standards; others use regional standards, such as those of the Gulf states or the standards of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation institute. Requirements on slaughter, stunning, alcohol content and animal-derived ingredients vary between them.
That is why we start with your markets. Tell us where you sell or plan to sell, and we identify which halal bodies are accepted there before any preparation begins. One certificate can sometimes cover several markets; in other cases you may need more than one.
Private label manufacturers supplying several brands should agree with each customer which halal body and logo is required, since different buyers in the same market sometimes prefer different bodies.
What decides the price
Halal consultancy with EUROTECH starts at $1,500. The final price depends on your number of employees, the complexity of your processes and the scope of certification.
- Number of products and ingredients to review
- Animal-derived ingredients or meat in the products
- Shared or dedicated production lines
- Number of markets and certificates needed
- Sites and travel for the audit
Products with simple plant-based recipes are usually quicker to certify than products with many complex ingredients or meat components.
Halal bodies may charge per product, per site or per year according to their own fee schedules, which we show in your quote once the body is chosen.
Meat processors with slaughter on site need the most preparation, since slaughter staff, methods and supervision must all be approved.

Import rules and recognition by country
We support producers in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa who sell into halal markets, including the Gulf states, Southeast Asia, Turkey, North Africa and Muslim consumer markets in Europe and North America. Each market has its own import procedures, and many require the halal certificate to accompany each shipment or to be registered with the import authority.
In some countries, halal certification of certain products is mandatory for import and sale; in others it is voluntary but expected by buyers. Labelling rules for halal logos also differ, and only the logo of the certifying body may be used, under its rules.
Food safety rules of the importing country still apply on top of halal requirements, so we check that your food safety certificates and documents are in order as well.
Documents often need to be legalised or registered for some markets, and shipping documents, labels and the halal certificate must name the same products and producer exactly.
Some markets also require halal certificates for packaging materials or cleaning agents that touch the product.
What to expect from the halal audit
The audit is carried out on site by the halal certification body, sometimes with a religious supervisor. The auditor reviews ingredient approvals and supplier certificates, walks the production and storage areas, checks segregation and cleaning procedures, and reviews traceability from raw materials to finished products.
For meat and poultry, the slaughter process is observed and the qualifications of the slaughter staff are checked. For processed foods and cosmetics, attention focuses on ingredients, processing aids and cross-contamination controls.
Cleaning validation may be checked where lines are shared, particularly after production of non-halal products. Records should show what was cleaned, how, by whom and how the result was verified.
Staff awareness is checked through short interviews: whether purchasing staff know they must not change suppliers without approval, and whether production staff know how halal and non-halal materials are kept apart.
Labels and packaging are reviewed before the halal logo is applied. Findings must be closed before the certificate is issued, and the decision is made by the halal certification body.
Keeping the certificate
Halal certificates are usually valid for one to three years depending on the body, with periodic surveillance visits. Any change in ingredients, suppliers or processes must be approved under your halal assurance system before it is used, because a single unapproved ingredient can invalidate the certification of a product.
Keep supplier halal certificates current and check their validity regularly. Train new staff in halal requirements, especially in purchasing, production and warehousing, where most mistakes happen.
Run internal halal checks between visits, covering ingredient approvals, segregation and labels, and record the results.
Review halal certificates of incoming meat and gelatine with every new delivery, not only once a year.
Keep training records up to date.
How this service works: EUROTECH provides the consultancy. Halal certificates are issued by halal certification bodies we work with. Whether a certificate is accepted depends on the rules of each importing country, so we confirm the right body for your markets before you start.
Questions buyers ask
How much does halal certification cost?
Our consultancy starts at $1,500. Products, ingredients, meat content, lines, markets and sites set the final price. Halal body fees depend on the chosen body.
Will my halal certificate be accepted in every country?
Not necessarily. Many importing countries accept only certificates from halal bodies they recognise. We confirm the right body for your markets first.
Who issues the halal certificate?
A halal certification body. EUROTECH provides the consultancy and arranges the audit with a body accepted in your markets.
Do we need a dedicated production line?
Not always. Shared lines may be acceptable with proper segregation and cleaning, depending on the products and the halal standard applied.
Can cosmetics be halal certified?
Yes. Cosmetic ingredients, processing aids and production are assessed in the same way as for food.
How long is a halal certificate valid?
Usually one to three years depending on the certification body, with surveillance visits in between.
