What an ISO 50001 audit checks

ISO 50001 is the standard for energy management systems. It is built like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, but its core is technical: you must understand where your energy goes, decide which uses matter most and show that your energy performance improves over time.

The auditor follows that chain. First the energy review: how you collected consumption data, which energy uses you found and which you classed as significant energy uses. Then the energy baseline you compare against, the energy performance indicators you track, and the action plans that are meant to move those indicators.

Data quality gets real attention. The auditor asks where the numbers come from, which meters or bills they rely on, how often they are read and whether the measurement plan covers the significant energy uses. Weak data makes it hard to prove improvement, and proof of improvement is what ISO 50001 certification is about.

  • Stage 1 review of the energy review, baseline, indicators and documented system
  • Stage 2 audit of controls, monitoring and action plans in operation
  • Certification decision and three-year certificate
  • Certificate listed on verify.eurotechcertification.com
  • Surveillance audits that look at energy performance trends

Online or on-site, and combining with other standards

Much of an ISO 50001 audit is data: spreadsheets, metering reports, utility bills and calculations. That part works well online, with the energy team sharing screens and walking the auditor through the figures.

The significant energy uses themselves are usually physical: compressors, boilers, furnaces, chillers, ovens, process lines or building systems. For industrial sites we recommend at least part of Stage 2 on site, so the auditor can see the equipment, the meters and the operational controls such as start-up sequences, set points and maintenance routines.

ISO 50001 shares the ISO harmonized structure with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. If you already run either, the energy system can be integrated into it: one document control, one internal audit programme, one management review with an energy agenda item. An integrated audit usually saves days compared with separate audits.

Many companies start ISO 50001 after ISO 14001, because energy is often already one of their significant environmental aspects.

What the price depends on

ISO 50001 certification with EUROTECH starts at $800. Audit time for energy management is set by how much energy you use and how complex it is, as well as by headcount.

  • Annual energy consumption and the number of energy types, such as electricity, natural gas, steam or fuel
  • Number of significant energy uses the system must control
  • Effective personnel: the people whose work affects energy performance
  • Number of sites and how similar their energy profiles are
  • Integration with ISO 14001 or ISO 9001
  • Travel for on-site parts of the audit

A single office building with one electricity meter is a short audit. A plant with steam, compressed air, process heat and several sites needs more time. We confirm audit days, travel and the full three-year cost in a written quote.

Clean data before the audit saves money. If your baseline, indicators and normalization method are documented and the figures reconcile with your bills, the auditor spends less time rebuilding the numbers.

How ISO 50001 certification works with us

  1. Application and scoping

    Step 1

    Scope and energy profile

Send your sites, energy types and annual consumption. We size the ISO 50001 audit and quote it in writing.

  2. Stage 1 document review

    Step 2

    Stage 1 energy review check

We review your energy review, significant energy uses, baseline, indicators and data plan, and list any gaps.

  3. Stage 2 on-site audit

    Step 3

    Stage 2 audit

The auditor traces significant energy uses from data to equipment and checks action plans and controls.

  4. Certificate and surveillance

    Step 4

    Certificate and performance checks

After the decision you receive the ISO 50001 certificate; surveillance audits review your energy performance trend.

Energy rules and incentives where you operate

We audit ISO 50001 for clients in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa. Certification is voluntary in most countries, but the reasons companies pursue it differ by region.

In the European Union, large companies face energy audit duties, and in many member states a certified energy management system is an accepted route to meet them. In the United Kingdom, an ISO 50001 system is a recognised route for the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme. In the USA, certification is voluntary and is often driven by customer requests, corporate carbon targets or utility programmes.

Your system must identify the energy laws and other requirements that apply to you and evaluate compliance. Bring that register to the audit, together with any energy audit reports or regulatory submissions from recent years.

Energy tariffs and carbon pricing also differ by country, which is why the business case for ISO 50001 varies by site. The audit itself does not change.

What to expect during the audit

Expect the auditor to pick one or two significant energy uses and follow them end to end: how the use was identified, which variables affect it, which indicator tracks it, what the target is, what actions were taken and what the data shows since.

Normalization is a common discussion point. If production volume or outdoor temperature drives your energy use, the indicator should account for it, otherwise a busy year looks like poor performance and a quiet year looks like success. The auditor checks that your method is reasonable and applied consistently.

Design and procurement are also in scope. ISO 50001 expects energy performance to be considered when you design new facilities or buy energy-using equipment, so be ready to show a recent purchase or project where energy was part of the decision.

Findings are graded as major or minor, and certification is decided on the evidence. You receive a written report that explains every finding.

Keeping the certificate: proving improvement every year

ISO 50001 differs from most management system standards in one important way: to keep the certificate you need to show that energy performance has improved, measured against your baseline. Surveillance audits look at the trend in your indicators and at the actions behind it.

Review the baseline when something changes the picture significantly, such as a new production line, a site closure or a change in product mix, and document why. Keep measuring, keep the action plans current and take the results to management review.

Operators make the difference. ISO 50001 expects people whose work affects significant energy uses to be competent and aware, so keep training records for the staff who run compressors, boilers or production lines and who know which settings drive energy use.

The current edition is ISO 50001:2018. Like other ISO management system standards, it was amended in 2024 to ask whether climate change is relevant to your organization, and the auditor checks that you considered it.

Questions buyers ask

How much does ISO 50001 certification cost?

With EUROTECH it starts at $800. Energy consumption, number of energy types, significant energy uses, staff and sites set the final price.

Do we have to reduce our energy use to get certified?

You must show improvement in energy performance against your baseline, which may mean using energy more efficiently per unit of output rather than using less in total.

What is a significant energy use?

An energy use that accounts for a substantial share of your consumption or offers real potential to improve, such as compressed air, steam or a process line. You decide the criteria and the auditor checks they are reasonable.

Can ISO 50001 be combined with ISO 14001?

Yes. Both use the same high-level structure, so the energy system can be integrated into the environmental system and audited together.

Is ISO 50001 mandatory?

Certification is voluntary in most countries. In some, such as EU member states and the UK, a certified energy management system can help meet energy audit duties.

Which version is current?

ISO 50001:2018, amended in 2024 to include consideration of climate change.
