What the ISO 14001 audit looks at
ISO 14001 asks you to know how your activities affect the environment and to manage those effects in a planned way. The auditor does not judge whether you are green enough. The auditor checks that you have identified your environmental aspects, worked out which ones are significant, know the environmental laws that apply to you and have a system that keeps you in line with them.
In practice that means looking at your aspects register, your list of legal and other requirements with evidence that you evaluate compliance, your objectives and the programmes behind them, operational controls for things like waste, emissions, chemicals and spills, and how you prepare for environmental emergencies.
- Stage 1 review of your aspects, legal register and documented system
- Stage 2 audit of controls in operation, including a site walk where relevant
- Certification decision and a three-year certificate
- Online listing on our verification portal
- Surveillance audits in years one and two, recertification in year three
Scope matters in ISO 14001 as much as in any standard. If you lease part of a building or share a site with another company, the boundary of your system has to be clear, so the auditor knows which waste streams, tanks and discharges are yours to control.
Choosing between an online and an on-site ISO 14001 audit
Environmental controls are physical: waste areas, chemical stores, bunds, discharge points, fuel tanks. For a manufacturing plant, a workshop or a logistics yard, an on-site Stage 2 is usually the honest choice, because the auditor needs to see the controls rather than photos of them.
For an office-based business whose main aspects are energy, paper, travel and electronic waste, much of the audit can run online. We look at your scope and your significant aspects and recommend the format in the quote.
If you already hold ISO 9001 or plan ISO 45001 too, an integrated audit saves time. Document control, internal audit, management review and corrective action are shared across the standards, so the auditor checks them once.
Remote audits still need live evidence. If part of your Stage 2 runs online, expect to walk the auditor around the site on a phone or tablet camera, opening stores and showing labels, containers and spill kits as they ask.
What sets the price
ISO 14001 certification with EUROTECH starts at $800. Environmental audits are sized a little differently from quality audits, because the environmental complexity of the site counts as well as headcount.
- Employees working within the scope of the system
- Environmental complexity: a painting line with solvents and wastewater needs more audit time than an office of the same size
- Number of sites and how different they are
- Integration with ISO 9001 or ISO 45001, which shortens the combined audit
- Travel when an on-site audit is needed
Your written quote lists the audit days and all costs for the three-year cycle, so you can budget surveillance audits from the start.
Preparing well lowers cost. A legal register that is already up to date, aspects that are assessed with a clear method and records that are easy to find all shorten the time the auditor spends looking for evidence.
How ISO 14001 certification works with us

Step 1
Scope and quote
Share your sites, headcount and main activities. We size the ISO 14001 audit by environmental complexity and quote it in writing.

Step 2
Stage 1 review
We check your aspects register, legal register and objectives, and tell you what to complete before Stage 2.

Step 3
Stage 2 audit
The auditor walks the site or reviews it online, samples controls and compliance evidence, and presents findings.

Step 4
Certificate and follow-up
After the decision you receive the ISO 14001 certificate, with surveillance audits in years one and two.
Environmental law differs by country
We audit ISO 14001 for companies in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa, and the legal register is where local conditions show up most. A plant in the European Union deals with EU waste, packaging and emissions rules on top of national law. A site in the USA works with federal and state permits. ISO 14001 does not replace any of this; it requires you to identify the laws that apply to you and to check regularly that you comply.
During the audit we sample your permits and compliance checks: waste transfer records, emission measurements, discharge consents, chemical safety data sheets. If a permit is missing or expired, that is a finding, so it pays to review the register before Stage 2.
Customers in export supply chains increasingly ask suppliers for ISO 14001 alongside carbon and energy data. Having the environmental system certified first makes those later requests, such as an ESG report or an EcoVadis questionnaire, much easier to answer with evidence.
What to expect on audit day
Expect the auditor to ask how you decided which aspects are significant, and to test that logic against what they see. If your register says chemical storage is significant, they will want to see the store, the spill kit and the training records of the people who use it.
Objectives are another common topic. The auditor checks that each environmental objective has an owner, a target, a deadline and a way of measuring progress, and that the results reach management review. Objectives that exist only on a poster are a typical minor finding.
Findings are graded as major or minor. A major nonconformity, such as no evaluation of legal compliance at all, must be closed and verified before certification. Minor findings need a corrective action plan with dates. The final decision rests on the evidence, and you receive a written report that explains every finding.
Keeping the certificate and moving to ISO 14001:2026
Between audits, keep your legal register current, track your objectives, run internal audits and hold management reviews. Surveillance audits sample these, together with any environmental incidents or complaints since the last visit.
Environmental performance should move in the right direction over the cycle. The auditor does not expect perfection, but does expect to see that you monitor your key indicators, such as waste per unit of output or energy use, and act when they get worse.
ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026 and its transition rules took effect on 14 September 2026. Certificates to the 2015 version lose validity on 30 April 2029, and after 31 October 2027 new certificates can only be issued to the 2026 version. The revision adds a clause on planning changes, restructures management review and makes the life cycle perspective and the link between context, risk and strategy clearer.
We can include the transition in one of your normal surveillance or recertification audits, so it does not need a separate visit.
Questions buyers ask
How much does ISO 14001 certification cost?
With EUROTECH it starts at $800. The final price depends on headcount, the environmental complexity of your sites, the number of sites and whether the audit is online or on site.
Do we need to be compliant with all environmental laws to get certified?
You need to know which laws apply, evaluate compliance and act on any gap. An unresolved serious legal breach is a major finding and can stop certification until it is addressed.
Is ISO 14001 mandatory?
No, it is voluntary. Many buyers, public tenders and lenders ask for it, and some supply chains require it from their suppliers.
Can ISO 14001 be audited together with ISO 9001?
Yes. Both use the same high-level structure, so an integrated audit is common and usually shorter than two separate audits.
Which version should we certify to, 2015 or 2026?
New certificates to ISO 14001:2015 are possible until 31 October 2027. After that only ISO 14001:2026 can be certified, so new systems should be built to the 2026 version.
Does ISO 14001 help with ESG or EcoVadis?
It gives you a structured environmental system with records, which supports the environment theme of ESG reports and EcoVadis assessments. It does not replace them.
